From Dreams to Destinations: Celebrating 650+ Heritage Walks with City Heritage
On a breezy morning in 2018, a small group of friends gathered at Mappila Bay in Kannur. What started as a simple walk through the historic harbor?blending stories, memories, and curiosity wasn't just a casual stroll. It was the beginning of something extraordinary.
During the lockdown, while our physical walks were on hold, we pivoted to the digital space by developing a range of online tools and platforms to continue our mission of storytelling. We hosted virtual heritage webinars, interactive history sessions, and community storytelling events, all designed to engage audiences from across the globe in the rich cultural fabric of North Kerala. These digital initiatives not only kept the spirit of exploration alive during isolation but also helped us reach new audiences, build educational content, and deepen our research into local heritage and lesser-known narratives.
That day marked the birth of City Heritage (2023)
Fast forward to September 27, 2023 - International Tourism Day - we celebrated a historic milestone: our 500th heritage walk. Held once again in the heart of Kannur, this special event was graced by distinguished guests from Mumbai and Pune and was organized in collaboration with our friends at Anubhav Vacations.
What began as an experiment in local storytelling has grown into a cultural movement across North Kerala. We've now conducted 650+ immersive walks across cities and coastal towns like Thalassery, Mahe, Vadakara, Beypore, Chaliyam, Kasaragod, Tanur, Ponnani, and Kozhikode ? each walk designed to unlock the hidden layers of local heritage, community narratives, and timeless traditions.
Walking Through History, One Story at a Time
From the Portuguese ramparts of St. Angelo Fort to the royal corridors of the Arakkal Museum, from the coir villages of Valapattanam to the ritual landscapes of Madayi and Ramanthali, every step we?ve taken has been a celebration of identity and memory.
We?ve explored the living traditions of Theyyam, the trading legacy of the Malabar Coast, the cosmopolitan soul of Kozhikode, and the coastal harmony between diverse cultures often guided by local elders, artisans, and community historians. Each walk isn't just a tour. It's a curated experience of heritage interpretation, conservation awareness, and human connection.
The Power of Partnerships and People
This journey has only been possible thanks to the incredible support system around us:
* Tourism stakeholders who trusted in our mission
* Hoteliers and homestays who opened doors for our guests
* Local guides and volunteers who breathed life into our routes
* And most importantly, our participants, whose curiosity and warmth kept us inspired
Your feedback, your stories, your repeat visits - they are the true measure of our success.
What's Next for City Heritage?
As we look toward the future, our vision is clear: to scale this storytelling movement into a full-time experience ecosystem - creating travel packages,, interactive workshops, and hyperlocal experiences that connect both domestic and global travellers to the roots of Indian culture.
We are also working to expand our presence to more cities and themed heritage walks from photo trails and calligraphy sessions to architecture circuits and river heritage explorations.
A Note of Gratitude
To everyone who has walked with us, worked with us, or supported us from afar - Thank You. You've helped make City Heritage more than a project. You've made it a community movement, and we can't wait to take this journey further with you.
Here's to the next 1000 walks.
